Baguette Box, Pike/PineI have a confession to make: I am not a dog person. I certainly love them in the grand, “Every living being on the planet is a blessed, beautiful child of Mother Nature” sort of way, but when it comes to daily life, I prefer to live unfettered by the duties that come along with an intimate relationship with a dog. I prefer not to have my hardwood floors destroyed by doggy claws. I prefer not to accessorize my clothes with doggy hair. I prefer not to carry–even for one second–a little plastic bag full of doggy poop.

Some people might call my sentiments about dog ownership coldhearted. In fact, some people already have called me coldhearted. An ex-boyfriend once labeled me (in so many words) the antichrist when I complained about the hot, swampy breath of his beloved canine. To be honest, I can’t say that I completely disagree with his opinion. I mean, what kind of callous jerk doesn’t love a dog?

There are times, however, when my aloofness towards dogs fades, and I transcend into a state of ogling, cooing, baby talking, poochie woochie worship. This emotional transformation always and only takes place when I see dogs outside a grocery store or a coffee shop or any other business where dogs aren’t allowed eagerly expecting the return of their owners. Something about the patience and loyalty of those waiting dogs, something about the intensity with which they fix their eyes on the exit doors, softens every cell in my body. Even my nuclei smile. I am endlessly grateful for this emotional state for it saves me from feeling like the second coming of Cruella DeVille.

What does any of this have to do with the Baguette Box? In addition to serving flavorful and filling sandwiches on chewy baguettes (roast leg of lamb with cucumber yogurt, pork loin with apricot aioli, grilled yellow squash and eggplant), the Baguette Box has decided to decorate their walls with snapshots of their customers’ dogs. I myself have cultivated quite a collection of dog photos since I cannot help but whip out my camera when I spot one in the aforementioned situation. I brought to Baguette Box a photo of a little white dog that I saw waiting outside of the Starbucks in Juanita last summer. Visual proof to all who visit, that I am not a heartless animal hater after all.

In addition to great sandwiches and entertaining dog pictures, Baguette Box serves salads, fries and a small selection of beer and wine. The space is lofty and sparse with tall windows overlooking Pine. If you are lucky you can grab a window seat and watch a dog waiting for his owner to finish his meal.
