Church Street Apothecary is packed with so many wonderful skin, haircare, bath and beauty products (for adults and babies!). Brands that are carried here include Bigelow, Marvis, Little Flower, California Baby, Phyto, Elizabeth W., Dr. Hauschka … The list goes on and on.

In addition to all the pretty bath and body goodness, the store stocks the essentials — like diapers, band-aids, tampons, OTC meds, laundry detergent, etc. And if you’re not in the market for any of the usual drugstore offerings, there’s still reason to come here. Lots of reasons actually. The apothecary has little Japanese trinkets, kids’ accessories, magazines, beautiful cards, and even the adorable Jill Bliss compact mirrors.

I don’t know how they fit so much cuteness in that storefront, while still making it a clean and inviting space. But, considering that the folks behind Church Street Apothecary also own Doe — another one of my favorite SF shops — I’m not surprised. Once you pay a visit here, you may never step foot in another Walgreen’s ever again.

I love places that serve multiple functions. For example, laundromats that are also cafes. Shoe stores that moonlight as cocktail lounges. Or, in the case of Azalea, a hip boutique that’s also a nail salon.

The majority of the shop is devoted to men’s and women’s clothing and accessories. In addition to its own private label, Azalea stocks an eclectic mix of local and big-name designers. Pick up a comfy sweater by Tart or a flirty Milly dress. If you’ve got a few hundred bucks burning a hole in your pocket, check out the beautiful Bylu necklaces.

Like most good boutiques these days, you’ll also find all of the hottest denim brands here — including Habitual, True Religion, Earnest Sewn, Seven and Paige. And you know what would look cute with your new jeans? A pair of 8ight2wenty shoes; they’re like a funkier version of your ol’ Converse.

When you’re done checking out the clothing racks, step into the back corner of the store and you’ll find the Z Beauty Lounge. It’s a little urban oasis — where you can treat your feet to a warm soaking, or pretty up your nails with a fresh manicure.

I’ve always been a big believer in multi-tasking, and Azalea lets me do just that: I can shop AND get in a little pampering — all conveniently under one roof.

I do not normally wear make-up. I do not own any concealer or foundation. I do not understand the need for lip glosses, plumpers, tints and whatever else is out on the market these days. Give me my trusty Chapstick and I’m good.

This is why, when I needed to be prettied-up for my wedding, I went straight to the experts at Benefit.

The staff at the Fillmore Street location was friendly, and seemed accustomed to dealing with make-up newbies. I explained to them my need to still look like myself on The Big Day — as opposed to a glamour shot of myself — and they suggested just a few goodies that would give me a little color yet keep me within my make-up comfort zone. There were no aggressive sales pitches. No snooty attitude.

Another perk of going to the boutique — instead of just a regular ol’ counter at the department store — is the eyebrow service offered. Yes, they’ll wax and pluck them to perfection. You can also get a facial here and full-body waxing is available.

The next time I need to get my fancy face on, you know where I’m going for good advice and helpful service. Plus, how could you not love a cosmetics company that has products with names like “Lyin’ Eyes” (eye concealer) and “Aruba in a Tuba” (self-tanner)?

Given what you put them through, don’t your tips and toes deserve a treat every once in a while? Silk Nail Salon isn’t ultra-swanky — but it does offer great service, as well as an inviting and clean atmosphere.

In 2005, SF Weekly readers voted this the best place for a manicure/pedicure. And it’s certainly one of the best values, especially considering its location on the edge of Pacific Heights. In addition to nail treatments, Silks offers full waxing services. A mani/pedi plus eyebrow waxing will only set you back $43.

You can choose your polish from a selection that includes Chanel, Dior, YSL and OPI. Then sit back in one of the plush recliners, with a drink in hand, and prepare to be pampered. Your feet (lucky them!) are immediately soaked in a basin filled with chamomile-infused water and glass marbles. Next up is a slathering of warm lotion, a precursor to getting massaged, rubbed, buffed and polished. The technicians are so skilled, your hands and feet will feel like they’re in heaven.

Once your mani/pedi is complete, you’re ready for the drying station — which is stocked with magazines and a candy bar, for your reading and eating pleasure. You may be tempted to linger a little longer than necessary. But rest assured that when you finally do hit the streets again, you’ll walk out feeling refreshed and relaxed … With beautiful nails that will last for weeks.

TIP: I came here with my bridal party the day before my wedding and we were whisked upstairs to a private room overlooking the rest of the salon. If you’re planning a small group event, ask about this space.
