After opening stores in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, Jonathan Adler finally arrived in San Francisco in summer 2005. His 1,800-square-foot store on Fillmore Street, which has the feel of an urban loft, seems to carry every Adler item ever made.
Adler started his career as a potter, which explains why vases, lamp bases and plates dominate the store. In recent years, he has branched out into everything from textiles to furniture. (I had a hard time tearing myself away from the apple green Chinese Chippendale chair with a brown corduroy seat.)
His style combines organic shapes, geometric patterns and chic minimalism. While a lot of his work seems to have universal appeal (he does have a collection at Bed Bath & Beyond), there are more than a few kitschy items (e.g., lamps with just lips on them or in the shape of a Buddha head).
In addition to all of Adler’s creations, the store offers a good selection of mixed-media paintings by San Francisco artist Rex Ray. Prices start at about $300 for the smallest ones.
While you’re browsing, be sure to check out Adler’s manifesto (listed on various walls and windows). Among his maxims: “We believe that your home should make you happy.” “We believe celebrities should pay full price.” “We believe in blowing your nest egg on our pots.” And, with some large vases costing as much as $550, you very well could.
