On a stretch of Market Street often referred to as “The Deco Ghetto” lies this cozy and elegant gourmet market. DeLessio is a bright spot in this neighborhood — literally. The cheerful yellow-and-red space, complete with chandeliers and charming table lamps, is reminiscent of a European cafe.
Step inside DeLessio — past its enclosed sidewalk patio — and you’ll find a fantastic smorgasbord. There are two food bars in the center of the space, offering such culinary goodness as roasted chicken, barbecue ribs, frittatas, salads, grilled vegetables, meat loaf and antipasto. Usually, mac’n'cheese out of a chafing dish scares me, but this was one of the best I’ve ever had. One bite and you’ll know why it’s DeLessio’s signature dish.
In the back of the market, you can place an order for a sandwich or choose from several delicious pre-made varieties on focaccia (don’t worry, they’re made fresh throughout the day). There’s also a good selection of wines and cheeses here, making it the perfect place to fill up your picnic basket.
As incredible as the food is, the real stand-outs at DeLessio are the sweets: scones, croissants, cookies, cakes, truffles and more. The mini cupcakes come in an assortment of flavors — including lemon cake with raspberry buttercream and coconut shavings; vanilla cake with vanilla frosting and fresh berries; gingerbread with lemon cream; bittersweet chocolate cake topped with apricot jam; and mint icing on fudge brownies. They may look too beautiful to eat, but you’ll be so glad you did.
