Essential Bodywork and Massage, Various Locations

Essential BodyworkI hate snooty spas. I hate when the supposedly relaxing massage makes you tense because you’re getting the distinct feeling that you’re getting ripped off but you don’t want to spoil the moment by complaining. And then they try to sell you overpriced lotions when all you want to do is cut your losses and leave. Pshaw! Who needs the pressure?
But I love pampering myself, so I’m always in the quest for the perfect massage. What makes a massage perfect, you ask? For starters, a knowledgeable therapist who customizes my session after discussing my complaints instead of forcing me to choose from an intimidating menu of trendy-sounding treatments. A quiet room where I can truly relax in aromatherapy-induced bliss is nice. Leaving with the feeling that not only did I spoil myself, but that I also did something good for my health.
I believe that I’ve found just that at Essential Bodyworks. Set in a tiny storefront in leafy Lexington, this massage studio is worth the drive.
Chris Hansen, the proprietor, is a master therapist who takes wellness seriously. She will find the tension in your body and work it away using a variety of massage techniques. There’s no one-size-fits-all massage here; your session will be tailored to your particular needs on the day of your visit. In addition to her skill, she has created a warm and luxurious atmosphere that allows you to relax and enjoy yourself.
Treatments offered by Chris and the other therapists include deep tissue, Swedish, Hot Stone Therapy, pregnancy, and Foot Reflexology. Serious massage doesn’t have to mean no frills. You will feel pampered - the cotton sheets are soft, the lighting and music are subtle and pleasant, the air is scented - but mostly you will finally understand how a good massage is supposed to feel.

After growing up in Santo Domingo, studying in Granada (Spain), and working her way up the east coast, she now calls the Boston area home. Some of her favorite travel adventures include crossing the desert by camel in Morocco, dancing Sevillanas at the Feria in Seville, and lounging on the beach at Ipanema. But give her a comfy bed and a good book and she’s happy anywhere – especially at home with her husband and son.
